Critique Partners

A great critique partner is worth more than gold.

I know I'm not the only one who thinks that. Here are my reasons as to why.

1. People who don't heart books just wouldn't understand. A fellow CP clearly has lots of love for books. Most people I know don't want to go on and on with me about what makes a book awesome. Although, I did spend an hour doing this very thing with friends at a bar. Odd, I know. Everyone else looked at us and laughed--I'm okay with that.

2. Those who don't write will never understand questions like "Aliens or super-humans? Which would be cooler? Seriously, tell me. Which one?" I know this. The only answer I got from non-writers about this one was "I don't know. Either one." That. Is. Not. An. Answer.

3. I want someone to tell me when something I write sucks. It's similar to walking around with seeds stuck in your teeth. If that's going on, you'd better tell me. CPs don't let fellow CPs walk around with ugly words written in their manuscript.

4. I get to read awesome stories before (almost) anyone else. And hopefully by the end, I've made them more awesome--as they've surely done to mine.

5. Sometimes I feel like throwing in the towel. It's amazing how I can go from "Yes! I reworked this scene and now everything is grand. It's so great, it shines!" and then to "I can't believe I didn't see that before. I'm a total failure and no one will ever, ever want to read my story." A good CP can give the perfect amount of criticism and support. They can tell you what's wrong but they always make sure you're left encouraged. Like this:

So to my critique partners that are filled with awesomeness and loads of advice that shines...

  1. I totally agree with you, especially with number 3 and your hamburger. A critique partner should make you want to keep writing not quit writing.

  2. My critique partners (I have three) are worth their weight in gold. It is a fine line between constructive criticism and just criticism. Not all people are up to it.
